What Happens if I Have Existing Sprinklers?

As you scan your property, wondering where might be the perfect placement of your new paver patio, you remember that sprinklers exist underneath your lawn. You feel unsure what to do, as you wonder if your sprinklers will present a larger issue when it comes to installing your new patio. Depending on your project, you may not even have to worry about those sprinkler lines under your grassy lawn. However, if your vision includes a large outdoor living space, you may need to redo the system in that specific area. As you continue reading, you will begin to understand what will happen to your sprinkler system depending on the scale of your future project.

 Sprinklers vs. Walkway/Patio
If a walkway or paver patio is what you have in mind for your next outdoor project, know that your existing sprinkler system will not create any major issues for your new design. With a smaller project like a walkway or patio, we have the ability to cut and move the lines out of the way. Whenever possible, we avoid keeping sprinkler lines underneath the patio. If a problem ever arises, your new outdoor space will not be destroyed for sprinkler repairs. In certain circumstances, we recommend having a sprinkler company come in and reassess your sprinkler lines and heads to accommodate your new patio. We have found that sometimes our clients are able to adjust their sprinkler lines themselves instead of bringing in a company. If your backyard space only allows for pipes to be located underneath your new patio space, PVC sleeves will be placed around them to protect them from any future damage.

Sprinklers vs. Large Patio or Pool
If you have ever thought about adding a pool and large patio for entertaining to your backyard space, you may have concluded that your yard will be torn up and your sprinkler lines will cause an issue. When taking on a project of this scale, we highly recommend contacting a sprinkler company before we begin our work. You will need to have the lines removed and a new plan drafted, so that your future sprinkler system will not interfere with your new pool and patio. Once we have finished our job, your sprinkler company can come in and run new pipes and get your system back up and running. However, if your backyard limits access to your new sprinkler pipes (too close to property line or flower beds in the way) we can install 4 inch PVC pipes that the sprinkler lines can be run through.

Hopefully this article has helped you to better understand what your future project with sprinklers will consist of. Keep in mind – the sooner you can contact your sprinkler company, the earlier we can begin work. We also recommend that they come after the project is done to ensure the sprinkler heads are on the edge of the patio and covering the right spots. We look forward to working with you and answering any questions you may have about your future outdoor project!
