What's under our Pool Patios

Installing pool patios are very similar to installing normal patios. With 2 major differences. One being the subbase which is poured concrete and two, the pitch on the pavers.

Coping

Coping is the term used to identify the material used to cap the pool edge or shell wall. Besides simply being necessary, the coping provides an opportunity for a decorative accent, which can greatly enhance the appearance of the pool, steps or walls.

The Cambridge Shapes are specially designed for specific structural, landscape and pavement applications and hardscape solutions such as steps, pool coping, edging and curbs, facing and permeable pavements.

Options we recommend are:

Stacked natural stone retaining walls create a terraced garden, showcasing a variety of plants and flowers.

Cambridge Crusader 12×24 Cap

Concrete pavers form a spacious patio with a pergola overhead, providing shade for outdoor gatherings.

6 x 12 Bullnose

A flagstone path winds through a serene backyard, passing by a tranquil pond and blooming flowers.

Pitch on a Pool Patio vs. a Normal Patio

Like a normal patio we have to be pitched away from the home and ALSO pitched away from the pool. Think about if you had a major rainstorm and all the debris from your patio washed into your pool.

Subbase Preparation

The first step in building a pool patio is setting the heights. Base prep is the most crucial part of pool patios. One reason being we pour a concrete base so we only have one shot to get it right, and compaction. Compaction is one of the most important parts of base prep. Because it is a new pool, all the soil around it was disturbed causing air pockets and voids that allow the dirt to settle over time. You can see signs of this if you ever visit a family member or friend’s house and their pavers around the pool are lower than the coping.

Pouring Concrete

Once compaction is complete and the forms are set, we pour the concrete. Pouring concrete can be a very tedious process. We have to ensure all our forms are set to the correct heights, area is clear of any obstacles that can affect productivity, tarps are placed to prevent concrete splatter and the fact that once the concrete is poured and screed out we need to wait for it to cure. Once the concrete is cured fully or enough to walk on without getting deformed we can continue working. Concrete cures to a solid object so removing would be a major hassle if done incorrectly. Concrete is always recommended to be used around new pools especially considering the chance of the ground settling is greater.

Coping, Sand & Pavers

Next, we install your coping of choice. Different coping types and pools require different applications. For example, bullnose can be glued to concrete where if it was a steel wall pool, we´ll need to install wire lath to the coping and then set the bullnose on concrete, depending on the situation you may see a concrete joint. At first, it might seem complicated, but our experienced pool and patio contractors will guide you through each step, ensuring precision and quality. Before installing the pavers, we will add a fine sand bedding layer for the pavers to sit on. Once squared away, and all the pavers are laid during, we can cut in any in-lays and add any borders.

Concrete edge applied to the exposed perimeter followed by polysand application. Keep into consideration, the process of creating a beautiful paver project is that the it will look messy before it looks great. The construction process will leave dust and small debris in the pool, no problem for your pool company to clean out. At last, you’ll have a stunning pool patio that perfectly complements your outdoor space.
