What's Under Our Retaining Walls?

We install our retaining walls to manufacturer’s specs. Depending on location, some retaining walls require a stone footing and some require a concrete footing. Here in New Hampshire the most common application is using a concrete footing. Also, filter fabric is used to separate the footing from the ground below.

What Size Wall Do You Need?

Step 1 to building a retaining wall is removing the existing wall if one is there. Retaining walls can vary in size, short (1-2ft tall) walls just retaining a small part of your lawn, 3-4 ft tall retaining walls, 4ft + and even multi tiered wall systems.

Footings

Step 2 is to dig out footings. There are many different footing types and depths. On our bigger walls we dig the footing to be 3ft deep and use concrete mixed on site. By the time we move to this stage, our experienced retaining walls installers have already assessed the specific requirements of your project. The first course of your new wall will be set in that concrete footing. Even so, it is most common for the first course to be buried underground.

The Process as We Build Upward

Each course thereafter is glued on top of each other. Also, as you build a wall up, we backfill with drainage rocks and add your drainage pipe and exit spouts at the correct heights. Because this is a crucial step in the construction process, our experienced team of companies that do retaining walls ensure proper drainage to prevent wall failure. Behind the drainage rocks will be filter fabric preventing any soil from mixing into the drainage rocks and seeping outside of the Wallstone.

Specs

Depending on where you live and the height of your wall, you may need an engineer to spec the wall to your home conditions for strength and stability. But, retaining walls can be built out of various different products. One of the most affordable is railroad ties (wood), however over time these will rot away and fail. Another type is a Wallstone that gets stacked straight up, this option works well but won’t be as good under pressure as well as a stepped retaining wall system. Consequently, retaining walls are a great way to add color and art to your yard while also creating usable space. When considering these options, it’s important to research companies that do retaining walls to ensure you get a quality installation. retaining walls installers
