What's Under Our Fire Pits

Fire pits are a quick and easy add-on to make your project beautiful. Most of the time we can just build it directly over your patio pavers. Other times, if you want it cut into the patio we will install it over a small concrete footing. Whether we are building a round, square, wood burning or gas fire pit we always ensure we install to the manufacture specs. For example, ensuring gas fire pits are ventilated, or wood burning has the proper heat protection on the block.

Location, Location, Location

Step 1 is strategically choosing a location for your fire pit. A Lot goes into choosing the right spot, which you can go over with on your free consultation when getting an estimate. You must keep into consideration, all though the fire pit itself is only about 3-4 ft in diameter, you will need a minimum of a 100 square feet area around it (10ft x 10ft) to ensure a comfortable place to hang out around. Also, trying to avoid trees and putting it not too close but not too far from your home.

Installation

Our most common practice is to build the fire pit on top of the pavers. However, some clients choose to have it cut in. In this scenario we will mix a small concrete footing for the fire pit to sit on and then add a border around the bottom (this is a more costly addition due to the time and labor it takes). Each course is glued together. After the fire pit is built we install a metal ring to help protect the blocks from the heat, which can cause them to crack.

Finishing Touch

The fire pit is then filled with sand to the bottom of the ring and is used as a bed to place your logs on and keep the fire elevated. Another way to dress up your fire pit is adding caps to the top, this will raise the price due to more material and labor.

Frequently Asked Questions
Installers utilize heat-resistant materials and specialized kits to ensure the fire feature is safe for years of use. We always ensure we install to the manufacturer's specs, such as providing proper heat protection on the masonry blocks themselves.
A custom stone fire pit creates a luxurious focal point that extends the usability of the outdoor space into cooler months. Adding a fire feature to your outdoor living space is a necessity for creating your family’s best memories
During a natural gas fire pit installation, contractors must integrate specialized venting ports into the stone base. These vents, combined with a professionally installed gas line, are required to meet strict safety codes. Following these manufacturer specifications ensures proper combustion and heat management, providing a safe, high-performing centerpiece for your outdoor living area.
A fire pit can be integrated as a built-in element by excavating a specific area within the patio for a solid concrete foundation. This footing provides the necessary support for the heavy masonry walls. Whether it is recessed into the stones or sits on top, this method ensures the feature is a durable, long-lasting hub for social interaction.
The area is excavated and a solid compacted base or concrete footing is established to ensure the structure remains level and stable. This prevents settling and ensures a comfortable area remains available around the beautiful fire feature for guests.
The professional team at Affordable Patio specializes in custom configurations, helping you incorporate fire pits seamlessly into your overall yard design. They work through every detail of the planning phase, ensuring that even the most ambitious concepts are structurally sound and aesthetically tailored to fulfill your specific project goals.
