To make things even easier, all the information you need about your new walkway installation is provided below. We are dedicated to ensure you have an exceptional experience from start to finish.
How Much Does a Paver Walkway Cost?
What's Under Our Walkways?
We construct our walkways to precise specifications, starting with a 4-6 inch base of ¾ inch crushed concrete, compacted with a gas-powered plate compactor. This is followed by a ⅜ inch layer of crushed stone for leveling. Next, we install the pavers, secure the edges with concrete, and finish by applying polymeric sand to the joints of your new walkway. (More detailed information provided below).
While the installation process might appear complex, rest assured that our expert Walkway Installers manage every detail with precision. We meticulously execute each element to ensure a durable and stunning walkway.
Achieving Perfect Elevation: Setting Patio Heights Based on Your Property Grade
The first step in any paver walkway installation is evaluating the level of your property. This is crucial for determining the height of your new Paver Construction project and sets the foundation for everything that follows. Understanding the elevation is essential. Once we’ve established our starting height, we incorporate a “pitch” into the pavers. Typically, we add 1.5 inches every 10 feet, sloping away from your home. This ensures proper water run-off and prevents your walkway from feeling like a ramp. While aesthetics are important, we prioritize functionality just as much. As experienced walkway contractors here in New Hampshire, we know how to balance design with practicality, ensuring you get a beautiful and functional walkway.
Excavation and Removal for Your New Paver Project in New Hampshire
Once we’ve established the proper heights, our crew begins the excavation process. Using the height of our string line as a guide, we dig down 7-8 inches. All the excavated soil and debris are promptly carted away to ensure a clean worksite. With the excavation complete and the area cleared, our team double-checks the heights to ensure accuracy. Then we start compacting the ground thoroughly. This crucial step helps prevent settling and provides a solid foundation for your new paver installation.
From Forms to Subbase: Essential Steps for a Durable Paver Installation
While one crew is working, other team members begin setting up wooden forms to maintain the desired level for our base. Once these forms are in place and temporarily secured, we fill the area with crushed stone, which we use for all residential projects. Paver walkway installation is typically necessary around new pools and driveways.
We install the crushed stone in “lifts,” adding ¾” layers, compacting each one before adding the next, until we reach the top of our forms. This method ensures a robust foundation for our paver construction project. Once the required level is achieved, we add a final ⅜” layer of crushed stone, which is then spread, tamped, and screeded to a smooth finish.
Because pavers are manufactured with a slight 1/16th inch variance, the sand layer helps us level the top surface of the pavers. This meticulous process not only ensures precision but also enhances the overall aesthetics.
Setting Up to Lay Pavers
Once the sand base is prepared, we begin setting up our square lines. When laying pavers, the joints between each paver create bond lines, and it’s crucial to ensure the walkway is aligned or “square” with your home or any other stable structure in the area. This not only follows proper construction etiquette but also ensures the most visually appealing result. Our skilled team follows best practices by laying the main pavers first and installing the borders afterward, ensuring a seamless and precise finish.

Borders
The border is your opportunity to add a distinctive touch of color to your project. The options are limitless—you can choose a border that matches the color of your walkway, opt for an accent color, or even go for a double border for added flair. Once all the pavers are laid, the walkway enters its final phase of completion.

Final Stages to Paver Construction
In the final stages of constructing a paver walkway, we add a concrete edge to the exposed perimeter. This concrete edge acts as a restraint, preventing the pavers from shifting out of place. Positioned about 1 inch below the top of the pavers, the concrete is subsequently covered with topsoil.
To secure the pavers and fill the joints between them, we use polymeric sand. This involves sweeping the sand into the joints, and after proper installation and water application, the sand hardens to a solid finish. This not only locks out weeds but also helps to keep the pavers firmly in place.
Paver Sealants
If you love the vibrant look of your walkway when it’s wet, sealers can help maintain that appearance. However, it’s important to wait at least one year before sealing your walkway. This waiting period allows the efflorescence to emerge from the pavers naturally. You can learn more about efflorescence in the section below.
