How Much Does a Paver Patio Cost?

What's Under Our Patios?

We install our patios to precise manufacturing specifications. The process begins with laying a 4-6 inch base of ¾ inch crushed stone, compacted using a gas-powered plate compactor. This is followed by a ⅜ inch layer of crushed stone for leveling. Next, we proceed with paver installation, secure the edges with concrete, and finally, fill the joints with polymeric sand to complete your new patio. (More detailed information provided below).

Setting Heights Based off the Grade of Your Property

The first step in installing a patio is to assess the level of your property, a crucial factor in determining the height of your new paver project. This initial evaluation sets the foundation for all subsequent steps. Understanding your property’s elevation is vital for a successful installation. Professional patio installers recognize the importance of this stage. Once we establish the starting height, we incorporate a “pitch” to the pavers, adding 1.5 inches for every 10 feet, sloping away from your home. This ensures proper water runoff and prevents the patio from feeling like a ramp. As a result, your patio will be both functional and aesthetically pleasing, creating a space you’ll love to enjoy.

Excavation, Removal of Soil or Debris in the Area of Your New Paver Project

Now that the heights are set, the crew can start to excavate. From the height of our stringline, we dig down 7-8 inches to achieve the required depth. All the soil we excavate will be carted away to maintain a clean work site. With that complete and all the soil removed, the crew will check one last time to confirm their heights and ensure accuracy. Following this, they will begin compacting the ground thoroughly to create a stable base. This step is crucial as it helps to prevent any future settling of the ground, ensuring the longevity and stability of the construction.

Setting Up Forms & Installing Crushed Stone

These wooden forms are essential for maintaining our base at the desired level. Once the forms are in place and temporarily secured, we begin filling the area with crushed stone. This material serves as the foundation for all residential patios. Poured concrete is reserved only for new pool installations.

We install the crushed stone in “lifts,” starting with a ¾” layer, compacting it thoroughly, and repeating the process until we reach the top of our forms. Once we’ve achieved the appropriate height, we add a final ⅜” layer of crushed stone. This final layer is spread evenly, tamped down, and screeded to a smooth finish.

Due to the 1/16th of an inch manufacturing tolerance in pavers, the crushed stone allows us to achieve a perfectly level surface for the pavers.

Establishing Precise Square Lines for Your New Hampshire Patio

Once the sand is prepared, we can establish our square lines. The gaps between each paver form bond lines, so when setting up your patio it’s important to ensure it is aligned, or “square,” with your home or any other fixed structures in the area. This approach follows proper construction etiquette and is most visually appealing. Our experienced team in New Hampshire is trained to lay the pavers first and add the borders afterwards, ensuring a flawless finish for your dream patio everywhere in New Hampshire.

Final Stages to Paver Construction

After we’ve laid down the pavers, the next step is to secure the patio’s perimeter with a concrete edge. This edge acts as a restraint, keeping the pavers firmly in place. We set the concrete about an inch below the top of the pavers and then cover it with topsoil for a seamless look.

To finish off the joints between the pavers, we use polymeric sand. This involves sweeping the sand into the joints, then adding water to activate it. Once set, the sand hardens, effectively locking out weeds and ensuring the pavers stay tightly together.

Paver Sealants

You might love how vibrant the colors of your patio look when they’re wet. Fortunately, there are sealers available that can give your pavers that same appearance. However, it’s important to wait at least one year before sealing your patio. This waiting period allows efflorescence to come out of the pavers. For more details, you can check out the Cambridge catalog.
